A baby crib is one of those hard to decide nursery purchases that parents want to make sure that they get it right as they’ll have to live with it for the next couple of years if not longer. And be sure that it is comfortable for both the baby to sleep and play in it and for parents easy to use.
Before you buy one there are a few of things to consider. First, size, they come in different sizes, you need to check your nursery dimensions so you know what size will fit in your space. There are standard cribs, convertible cribs, cribs with changing station and mini cribs to choose from.
You might want to consider a crib that will grow with your child. Convertible crib converts into a toddler bed, daybed and possibly to a full-size bed. It’ll save you a lot of money. Instead of buying a new bed every couple of years, you have one that can be adjusted every couple of years or so depending on how fast your child grows.
When buying a crib safety comes first. You want to make sure that it doesn’t have a dropside because dropsides were banned as they are unsafe. Also, you want to make sure that the paint is non-toxic. You don’t want teething baby chowing on the railings and eating toxic paint. In addition look for one that meets safety standards.
Knowing how hard it is to decide to purchase something as important as a baby crib this is why I’ve written this guide and reviews so you understand the choices available to you. Hopefully, you’ll find one that is perfect for you and your baby. A crib that you’ll be happy with for years to come.
A standard crib is a regular full-sized crib. In terms of comfort and functionality, most of them have adjustable mattress height. So you can adjust the mattress height as your baby grows. But there is no changing station attached to it. If you feel like you need one, you need to purchase it separately. They are less expensive and less heavy. A standard crib will last from a newborn up to to 18 – 24 month. Most standard cribs are convertible into a daybed, toddler bed and even to a full-size bed with headboard and some with footboard. Typically the conversion kit must be purchased separately, it costs around $40 – $100 depending on a model. Also, you need to purchase a full-size bed frame and a mattress.
Benefits of standard crib
- Less heavy
- Takes up less space
- Less expensive
- May convert to toddler bed, daybed or even full-size bed
Beautiful, Affordable and Long Lasting DaVinci Convertible Crib
DaVinci Kalani 4-In-1 Convertible Crib is a very popular choice among parents for its versatility beautiful look, quality construction, and price. Beautifully designed with no sharp edges on the top that you could scrape your arm against while getting the baby in or out or could hurt your baby. Very high quality and sturdy, it’ll even survive an energetic child jumping on it.
It converts to toddler bed, daybed, and full-size bed. What’s great is that it comes with a rail to turn it into a toddler bed. That will save you around $50 – $75 down the road. However, if you’re planning to turn it into full-size bed you have to buy the DaVinci Full-Size Bed Conversion Kit. Some people buy it together with the crib instead of waiting five or six years because they might not be able to get them. For more info on the DaVinci Full-Size Bed Conversion Kit click here.
It is very spacious. The mattress support is metal and it has 4 height levels. Most cribs have 3, so that should give you a little more flexibility to make it more comfortable for you and safe for your child.
- Assembled dimensions: 54.375″L x 35″D x 41.875″H
- Crib: Stop using when child begins to climb or reaches 35″
- Toddler Bed: 50 lbs
- Full-size Bed: 500 lbs
A standard size crib mattress fits very well. The mattress is not included. Best is to buy a two-sided mattress that has infant and toddler side. It’ll last longer and you’ll save some money.
It holds up extremely well, there is no significant wear or tear even after a few years of using it. It should last for years to come. But you need to keep in mind that it’s made from pine, a wood which is beautiful and of good quality but on the soft side and a teething baby can definitely leave some teeth marks on the rails. To avoid those accidental scratches and ‘teeth bite marks incidents’ I’d recommend getting some rail covers/pads to protect the top rails. Especially once a child starts teething. And be careful when putting it together.
You should set an hour or an hour and a half to put it together. All pieces are labeled and the instructions are simple to understand. It’s much easier to assemble if you arrange all of the pieces and hardware exactly as shown in the alphabetized contents page of the instructions. It’s going to be a lot easier to understand the assembly process and you’ll save yourself some time and frustrations. Having two people put it together makes it much easier to line up some pieces.
It meets and exceeds all US safety standards. It is JPMA certified, meets ASTM standards and CPSC regulations as well.
It has Greenguard certification to ensure that there are no toxins that sometimes are added to cribs. That’s important because when your little one starts teething and chewing on the top rails you don’t have to worry about them getting sick. Moreover, most Greenguard certified cribs sell for about $400-$600, this one is a lot cheaper.
All in all great sturdy crib. It has the same look and quality as cribs that cost $500 or higher. It’ll hold up extremely well for years to come. And for what you getting, the price is absolutely incredible. Available in 11 gorgeous colors.
For those who like this crib and don’t have enough space, It also comes in a “mini” size for smaller spaces. DaVinci Kalani 2-in-1 Mini Crib and Twin Bed, for more info, click here.
Beautiful, Affordable, Well Made 5 in 1 Convertible Crib
If you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for a crib but still wanted a good quality, safe reliable standard sized crib Dream On Me Ashton 5 in 1 Convertible Crib is a good choice. It is a full-size crib so there is plenty of room for the baby to grow into it. The frame is very sturdy, made from real wood (pine), the paint finish is really smooth and the colors are beautiful. All the top sides are rounded so that way your child is not going to hit their head on sharp corners. Once put together it is rock solid. Sturdier than other cribs at this price point.
It can be converted into a toddler bed, daybed and full-size bed with an option to have both footboard and headboard or just headboard. However, you need to keep in mind that the toddler bed rail and full-size bed frame are not included. You need to buy them separately down the road. It does come with an extra stabilizer bar to replace the front side at its lowest level when you convert it to a toddler bed but if you need some extra security so your child won’t roll out of his bed you need to buy the toddler bed rail. Even with the extra cost down the road, it is still one of the well made and least expensive cribs on the market.
The mattress support is metal spring and is very sturdy. You also have the option of four different heights settings so you can adjust the mattress as you wish. Initially, you can have the mattress closer to the top when your baby is young and then drop it closer to the floor once the little one is old enough to stand up. Another important thing to keep in mind is that although a standard crib mattress fits it very well, you should not use a mattress that is more than 6 inches thick. The Dream On Me 6-inch Full-Size Firm Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress is perfect for this crib.
Assembly shouldn’t take more than an hour or an hour an a half. The instructions are fairly easy and straightforward to follow. You might need an extra set of hands here and there for some parts.
It meets or exceed all applicable ASTM and CPSC standards and is free of phthalates, latex, lead and BPA.
If you’re searching for a crib that’s well built, safe, lasts through multiple children, is nice looking, and affordable this is a great choice. For the price (under $150) this is definitely a worthwhile purchase and will work well for your needs.
Price Range $131.99 – $104.99 Depending On Color
Modern Style Convertible 3-in-1 Standard Crib Without the Hefty Price
If you’re looking for an elegant, simple, strong, good quality and safe standard crib, Union 3-in-1 Convertible Crib should be on top of your list. Sleek modern unobtrusive design and the quality is excellent. Very sturdy yet lightweight which makes it’s easy to move if needed. There are no wobbly legs or loose parts. Even if you have a very energetic child who likes to jump or bounce, it’ll hold up very and your child will be safe as can be in it.
One of the best cribs for shorter moms and dads. It is a standard sized crib but sides don’t come up as high as other cribs allowing you easily to place your child without straining yourself or waking them up. Even moms with c-section will be able to get baby in and out easily.
With the slim design, you can even have it in your bedroom if you want your little one to stay with you at night.
Here are the outside dimensions:
- 29.5 inches wide x 53.5 inches long and x 36 inches high
Standard sized crib mattress fits this crib just perfect. (you need to buy it separately) The mattress has 4 adjustable settings. It comes with well-made metal frame mattress support with springs which is pretty firm and it doesn’t squeak.
It converts to a day bed and toddler bed (you need to purchase the toddler conversion kit separately). It’s about $50-$60.
Another thing worth noting is that a teething baby can cause the paint to peel and leave teeth marks dents, etc on the rails. I would highly recommend buying teething guards. They are about $20.00. Even if it happens, for the price you paid for this crib most probably you won’t be upset.
It meets ASTM international and US CPSC safety standards for the utmost safety.
One of the easiest cribs to assemble, the instructions are straightforward and easy to read and follow. You should be able to put it together by yourself within 30 or 60 min top. The tools and supplies are well packaged and everything is nicely organized.
Bottom line, I’d say that this is a great crib for the price, and will definitely get the job done. Great style and quality. More importantly, you can rest assured that your baby will be safe in it. A crib that will grow with your baby, and won’t break the bank! It’ll last for multiple kids if you take care of it. Offered in a nice variety of colors, similar colored cribs cost over twice as much.
A combo crib is an all-in-one option that comes with a changing table attached. It’s a good space saving solution for a small nursery or an apartment. Combo cribs are multi-functional. Many of those cribs convert from into a toddler bed, daybed or full sized bed. When converted into a full sized bed the changer becomes a nightstand or dresser. They are cost-effective because instead of buying 2 separate pieces of baby furniture you can buy a Combo Crib that has all 2 pieces built in one, saving you space and money in the long run. Another great benefit of a Combo Crib is the convenience of having most of your baby accessories like diaper changing items and clothes within reach. This will come very handy especially during those late nights and middle of the night diaper changes. Since you’ll have everything easily accessible diaper change will be quick and your baby may not even wake up.
Advantages of a crib with changing table:
- Cost-effective long-term bedding solution
- Built to last
Very Versatile and Beautiful 4-in-1 Crib with Changing Table
This beautiful Stork Craft Portofino 4-in-1 crib with changing table is versatile, very sturdy, well made and offers good storage. The beautiful design is both modern and traditional. You’ll love that it is transitional, so you won’t have to purchase a toddler bed in a couple years and after that a few years later a full-sized bed. Perfect crib and changing table combo for those who live in an apartment or have a small nursery. Having the changing table attached to it takes up less room than getting a separate changing dresser.
It converts from baby crib into a toddler bed, day bed then to a full-size bed. It comes with everything including the rails to convert this into a toddler bed or daybed. Other similar cribs require you to purchase those pieces separately, which can be as much as $40 to $100. The only thing you will need to purchase to make it a full-size bed is a full-size mattress and a metal full-size bed frame. They are not that expensive, cost around $20 and are sold at most stores that sell beds and mattresses.
One thing that you have to keep in mind is that the changing table cannot be removed/detach and used separately while using it as a crib, toddler bed, or daybed. When it is converted into a full-size bed, the changing table can be detached and function as a dresser or nightstand.
Another great feature is the adjustable mattress support system. You can adjust the mattress base up and down, there are three different levels so you can adjust the height as your baby gets older. This also helps if you’re a shorter person so you won’t have trouble reaching the baby or possibly had a c-section and can’t bend too far.
We all know that babies require a lot of stuff to take care of them, the convenient changing station comes with a hanging bar in front, three drawers and three shelves on the side. There is definitely sufficient storage and you don’t have to buy a dresser. The drawers are spacious and you’ll be able to get all baby clothes and burp cloths in there along with all of the changing needs for infants like wipes, diapers, baby powder, diaper rash cream, etc. A drawer holds 50+ diapers. And you might have some extra room for toys. The drawers fit perfectly in the track and slide in and out very easily and are very quiet.
The 3 back shelves on the side provide even more storage. They are great for storage for things you don’t need to reach for every day, such as storage for spare diapers and wipes or other baby things. One shelf holds two packs (36 count) of diapers and 2 large packs of wipes.
The safety rails surrounding the top of the changing table are there to help keep your baby safe inside and it does come with a changing pad which is waterproof. So technically you don’t need another one. However, some parents find that the changing pad is on the thin side. If you plan on purchasing a thicker changing pad than the one provided it may be difficult to find one that fit the dimensions because the changing pad isn’t a “standard” size. Most changing pads are 30″ long and the changing pad on this crib is about 27″ or 28 long.
The changing pads that fit well Stork Craft Portofino 4-in-1 Fixed Side Convertible Crib and Changer are iLuvBamboo Changing Pad which is 14” x 27”. Click here for more info
You could try Summer Infant Contoured Changing Pad, but you might have to squish it in there… click here for more info.
It doesn’t come with a mattress so you need to purchase it separately. You can buy the mattress which is listed with the crib on amazon website or Safety 1st Heavenly Dreams Crib Mattress will work very well with it as well. Click here for more info.
Assembling it isn’t that difficult but you need to be careful and expect that it will take about 2 to 3 and half hours at a fairly leisurely pace. Depending on how good you are at assembling furniture. The directions are fairly easy to follow. Two people are required for some parts. The key is not to rush. You need to separate all of the pieces in the beginning and make sure you read the directions properly. It’ll pay off big time and you’ll be less frustrated rather than if you mess up in the beginning and notice it at the end, being patient is the key.
Overall a fantastic crib with changing table at a great price. It has a great look, offers good storage. It is priced better than comparable units from other manufacturers and local box stores. A very sturdy and it feels and looks like its a lot more expensive than it actually is. Definitely a crib for anyone looking to save a little space and have less furniture in their nursery. The 4 in 1 makes it a great value as you can use it for longer than just being a baby crib. It will last through all stages of infancy, childhood and beyond. It meets or exceeds all USA ASTM and CPSC safety standards and is JPMA certified. Available in different colors to match any color scheme in your nursery.

Most Affordable Full-Size Crib and Changing Table Combo
Dream On Me 4 in 1 Full-Size Crib and Changing Table Combo is one of the most affordable cribs on the market. Perfect for those who don’t want to or can’t spend over $200.00 and like the idea of having the changer being attached to the crib, as well as the 3 shelves for extra storage. You might think that it might be a bit flimsy at this price, but it is well made a good quality product, sturdy and has a great modern look.
It converts from a crib into a toddler bed, a day bed, and a full bed. The frame of the crib and changer might feel on the lightweight side, which would make you think it’s not very sturdy. However, when you put it together the right way it’s incredibly sturdy and durable. It’s also easy to move if needed.
There are 3 positions for the mattress so you can adjust the height of the mattress as your baby grows. You can put it at the highest setting for newborns so it’s easy to put the baby in and out of the crib, and lower it as the child is able to crawl or stand.
What’s really unique about this crib is although the changing table can only be attached to one side, since the sides of the crib are exactly the same you can simply turn the crib around for whichever side you want the table to be on. This little feature helps a lot to have your nursery arranged the way you want it. Not too many cribs on the market have this feature.
You just need to pay attention to the dimensions, they list the length of the crib without the changing station. So for someone who might have a limited space it could be a problem. The actual length of this crib is about 71 inches. Also on some websites, the description says that it has ‘locking wheels’, well this crib doesn’t have any wheels. Last but not least the description says that ‘bed frame’ is not included which might make you think that you’d have to buy a bed frame’ in order to use it. What they mean by ‘bed frame is not included’ is the bed frame needed when you convert it to a full bed. Also, it doesn’t come with toddler rail, that’s the small square rail that’s in the middle pic just below the headline above. Wheater you buy or not the toddler rail, later on, is up to you as this crib can be used as a toddler bed without having to buy a conversion kit. You can buy it for about $20.00 in case you want to have a safer bed for your child. Other than that this crib comes with everything you need to be able to use it.

Another nice feature is the teething guards on 2 sides covering on the top rail to protect it from baby nibbling.
The changing table comes with a changing pad and installable safety straps. The changing pad thick enough for the few minutes at a time it is used. If you find it on a thin side keep in mind that changing station is not a standard size and standard change pad don’t fit this. You can drape a receiving blanket to make it more comfortable or buy the iLuvBamboo Waterproof Changing Pad. Click here for more info. The changer is very roomy and makes it so much easier to change baby.
The shelves have a storage good area. On the top one, you could put diapers, wipes warmer and tubes of cream and other stuff that needs to be easily accessible. And on the lower one, you could place clothes, receiving blankets to keep at hand. And whatever doesn’t fit can be easily stored underneath the crib.
When you convert it into a full sized bed, the changing station along with the shelves can be used as a nightstand next to the bed or a stand-alone shelve.
Assembly isn’t that difficult, it comes with very easy to follow directions. Keep in mind that not all the parts are labeled, however, the instruction manual shows detailed pictures of what parts to put together 1st, 2nd, and 3rd…etc and all tools for assembly are included.

Some of them fold out for easy storing and work well as a secondary crib or for overnighters at Grandpa & Grandma’s or travel if you have a bigger car like SUV or sedan.
