A Baby Monitor lets you hear, see and talk to your baby. Which one to choose ? Our frequently asked questions cover everything you need to know about baby monitors before making a buying decision.
The short answer in NO. You don’t. Parents for decades have been raising children without one and their children turned out just fine. It’s not a necessity. However if you can afford the extra cost here are some benefits of having a baby monitor.
The most obvious one is peace of mind in knowing that your baby is safe while you’re away in another room. It also allows you to sleep peacefully knowing you’ll be alerted to any irregularities in your nursery.
Please see our guide Choosing Best Baby Monitor
VOX stands for Voice Activated Alert. This feature will extend your battery life but more importantly while your monitor is in ‘sleep’ mode it will alert you and turn on when your baby cries. Some brands like Foscam FBM3501 offer both, audio and video VOX, if your baby cries you will hear it and the screen will turn on automatically. Other like Infant Optics DXR 8 have audio VOX only, meaning that you will hear the sound but in order to see what’s going in your nursery you’ll have to manually turn on the screen.
Always chose baby monitor which will allow you to adjust VOX sensitivity levels. It determines how sensitive the monitor is to your baby’s cry. It will help you to filter out unnecessary sounds. For example, if your baby is a quiet sleeper, adjust the VOX sensitivity to the lowest level. This tells the monitor to detect subtle sounds, and will turn on your monitor even if your baby makes a little noise. Great feature for nighttime monitoring allowing you to have a good night sleep knowing that you’ll be alerted in case your baby needs your attention.
If your twins sleep in the same room/nursery you’d need a baby monitor with pan-tilt and zoom feature. This feature will allow you to adjust the viewing angle of the camera.
If you have a large nursery, one of the best selling baby monitors that we recommend is Infant Optics Baby Monitor with Interchangeable Optical Lens. It has Pan/Tilt and Zoom, moreover, it has a wide angle lens which allows you to see your entire baby room/nursery. See our review here.
Any baby monitor which is expendable to more than 2+ additional cameras will to the job just fine. Most of them are. See our list of best selling baby monitors. However, you need to pay an attention if they have a ‘scan’ feature.
A baby monitor with a scan feature will automatically scan each room lets say every 2, 3 or 5 min. showing you what’s going in each room.
Without the scan feature you have manually select which room you want to view.
If you live in a big house or plan to monitor your baby from outside of your home long range is important. For example, Foscam FBM3501 offers 980 feet (300 meters) range without any obstructions. Please note the actual range will depend on how many walls the signal has to pass through.
