Having a child is a wonderful thing, it brings so much joy to every parent without any exceptions. Taking care of diapers is not 🙁 Babies create a lot of messy diapers in their first years, unfortunately parents have to take care of it and they need an easy, effective way to deal with that mess.
One of the best ways to deal with the diaper business is a diaper pail. However, just like with any other product there are so many of them and the choices can be overwhelming and time consuming trying to figure out which one is best.
To help you out, we have narrow down the list of best diaper pails to just a few.
Each of them offers different set of features, which one you chose depends on what appeals you best, best odor control or the ability to empty the pail any time you want without wasting any refills or a pail that doesn’t require special refill bags.
So let’s take a look at some of them and see what they have to offer to help you get rid of ‘diaper smell’ from your house or nursery.
At the bottom of this page, you’ll find a quick comparison table as well.
Best Economic Diaper Pail
This is one of the best diaper pail out there. Two great features among others make it very unique. First one, very simple, but makes life a lot easier, moms have been asking for this for years, hands free disposal.
The second one, because it uses a liner (works with regular garbage bags too) you can empty it anytime you want without waiting for the bag to be full and without wasting any refills.
Another great advantage of this diaper pail is the way you remove the bag. To empty it, most diaper pails require you to open the lid and tie the bag and pull it out from the top, which causes a lot of odor to escape right into your room, not to mention how unpleasant the whole experience of removing the bag is.
Diaper Dekor doesn’t work like that. The unique design let you pull the bag out from the side with the lid closed, so you don’t have to inhale the smell coming out of a bag full of dirty diapers as you would when removing it from the top. That’s a feature that other diaper pails don’t have.
There is bag cutter attached to the side door that’s easy to use. So you don’t need any knife or scissors.
You have to see the 2 part video below to see how cool and easy it is. First part is manufacturer demo and the second a real life example.
Plus the good news does end here.
Hands free disposal
Just step on the pedal and the lid opens, you drop the diaper through the trap door and you done ….. just walk away. The opening is big enough so you won’t have to twist or squeeze diapers in the paile.
When you done, the lid snaps back up to keep smells in, you can even lock it if you’d like. BTY, the lock will come in handy when your LO starts to walk and explore.
Nothing makes easier a midnight diaper change than ‘hands free disposal’. Especially in the beginning when you are changing diapers at 3 am. At that time you just want to put the diaper in it without worry about closing the lid or smell (it snaps back automatically) and go back to sleep.
This is probably the most important question. Does it contain the odor well ?
Dekor does exceptional job containing the smell. You won’t smell a thing even with the can sitting right next to your couch. And we’re not talking about newborn diapers. The deal breaker for most parents are the stinky diapers when your LO starts to eat solid food. And Dekor won’t let you down.
However there is one thing that you need to be aware, and that’s a problem that most diaper pails have. Some odor will escape from this pail through the deposit hole as you open it to put a diaper in it. That’s something almost unavoidable. After all there are dirty diapers in there. How bad it smells when you open it, it will depend on how many diapers are in there.
You won’t have any ‘smell’ problems if you change the diaper bag on regular basis, most parents with this type of pail do it every second or third day, although it can hold a week of used diapers. If it does start to smell a bit funky when you open the lid you know it’s getting full and at that point you need to change it.
And here comes the true value of Diaper Dekor that makes it unique. Because it uses a liner instead of fixed bag, you can change it any time you want without wasting money or waiting for the bag to be full. It will come handy when you have really bad diaper in there, we all know things do happen 🙁
To minimize the unavoidable, parents put Arm and Hammer odor control discs inside or use scented bags. But again, if you change the bag on time before it starts to smell funky, you won’t have any problems.
Other than for the brief unavoidable moments when you open the lid, and again it will depend on how full the bag is, it definitely contains the smell very well and there won’t be dirty diaper smell in your child’s room, or any room in your house for that matter.
The refill system is another great thing that makes this diaper pail stand out and exceptional. The refill is one long liner which allows you use the the pail as you wish. So no more waiting for the bag to be full before it is taken out. No more wasting money on throwing away half empty refills.
Because it uses a liner instead of fixed size bag it gives you full flexibility how and when to empty the pail without wasting any of it. Simply refill whenever you need to. Just tie off the bag and cut it with the safe handy bag cutter attached to the door and you’re done. Moms love the refills and the ability to cut the bag off at any desired size.
The refill lasts long time and the money is worth the convenience.
Another benefit to this diaper pail is that if you don’t want to use the refills, you can use other trash bags of your own. No big deal.
13 gallon trash bags, even the scented will work just fine. Although you can you use regular trash bags most customer buy the liner because of the extra convenience it offers. The cost of the refill is not not much different than regular garbage bags anyway.
Or you can use Diaper Dekor Cloth Liner or Planet Wise.
How much they cost and capacity
The Diaper Dekor Plus Refill, 2 Count is about $14.50, in one box you’ll get 2 refills. There is biodegradable version available too.
Again, the plastic is one long roll which you tie off as you use it so you’re not wasting liners. Which is also great if you want to empty the pail after a particularly smelly diaper.
One pack of 2 liners is good for around 900-1,000 of newborn diapers and last for about 2 months.
If you don’t want to buy the refills, you can use standard 13-gallon trash bags. They fit perfectly Dekor Plus. However, with regular bags, you lose the freedom of emptying the diaper bin whenever you want.
Cloth Liner. A pack of 2 Cloth Diaper Pail Liners costs around $21.00 – $22.00 They are available on amazon. They are waterproof, machine washable.
This pail works very well with cloth diapers too. Use either, plastic refill or cloth liner. Just keep in mind that cloth diapers are more bulky and you’ll have empty it more often.
The pail (plus model) can hold hold up to 60 newborn diapers before emptying.
Changing the bag
Change the bag is very easy and efficient with the liners. It has a door-mounted cutter, just cut it, tie a knot, and dispose. As simple as that. Even dad can do it 🙂
The bag can be emptied whenever you want because you cut it. You can keep the pail as full or empty as you want, and change it as often as you want. In fact it makes it economical and saves money too. The fact that you can tie it off and take it out without bag waste is one of the biggest pros to this pail.
And if you run out of the liner, you can use a regular garbage bag as a backup.
Maintenance, both changing bags and sanitizing is very easy and can be done in a few minutes. To disinfect, just wipe it down. There are no any creases or crevices for things to get into so this adds to the ease of cleaning too.
After you’re done with the diapers use it in the bathroom, kitchen or garage as a convenient and odor free way to dispose garbage.
Simple, ready to use out of the box, no pushing or twisting diapers in. The design is simple, you can’t even tell if it’s a diaper pail. It works well too. Definitely a great product worth your money! Almost forgot to mention, it is made from plastic that doesn’t absorb the smell of dirty diapers which yet another great thumb up for this pail.

No More Smells with This Diaper Pail That’s Easy To Load, Use, Empty and Clean
Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail is another unique pail that my appeal to some customers. Most if not all diaper pails are made from plastic, and the problem with it is that over time the plastic absorbs the smell and it is next to impossible to get rid if it no matter how hard you try.
Ubbi eliminates this problem because it is made from from powder-coated steel which doesn’t absorb any odor.
It works well with newborn and toddler sized diapers. It is one of the few pails out there that works with cloth diapers too. Which a very nice feature.
It does work very well except for the brief moments when you open it to dispose a diaper in it. To minimize it parents leave a box of baking soda in the bottom for extra odor eating, and apparently it does work magic.
When closed you will not have a problem with odor escaping even if you put some stinky diapers in it you won’t smell a thing after you close the lid. Moreover, there is a special rubber seal that does excellent job to keep the stinky odors from getting out of the pail.
Easy to use
Very easy to open and use. Although it doesn’t have a foot pedal like Diaper Dekor it is easy to open and close with one hand to put another diaper into the bin. All you need to do is, just slide the lid to open it, drop the diaper in and slide back to close it and you’re done. The deposit hole is big enough so you won’t have to squeeze diapers in it.
It has a childproof lock too, which is simple and effective, so you don’t have to worry about your toddler getting into it and making …. let’s say a mess.
Another great advantage it has over other diaper pails is that no special bag is required, meaning that you can use regular (13 gallon) trash bags instead of buying expensive refills. The pail cost more than others but in the long term you save save money by not buying expensive special bags. It’s a feature that makes it economical, flexible and convenient.
It does work with reusable diaper liners too.
Cost of refills and capacity
Ubbi does sell Plastic Bags made for this pail but you don’t have to buy them. Regular 13 gallon kitchen bags work very well with it.
The Ubbi bags are kind of expensive compared to regular trash bags:
1 box of 25 bags sells for about $7.99, a pack of 50 for about $15.99 (each bag is 13 gallon size)
despite the price, a lot of customers are recommending them as they are strong and thick and hold a large amount of diapers.
One bag can hold a week worth of diapers assuming regular use of 4-6 newborn diapers a day per child. If you use cloth diapers it can hold 2-3 days worth of diaper as they are bulkier.
Ubbi Cloth Diaper Pail Liner: One Ubbi Cloth Diaper Pail Liner sells for about $15.99 and Ubbi Twin Pack Cloth Diaper Pail Liner for $29.95 which is a bit more expensive than Diaper Dekor Cloth Liner
The liner is waterproof, machine washable and reusable. Each Ubbi cloth liner has 7 gallon capacity.
In terms of cleaning Ubbi diaper pail is mostly maintenance free. However there will be times when you would want to clean it. Just use a dry or wet cloth with mild soap, if you do use wet cloth, let it completely dry out before you use it again. It’s because when you completely seal a bin like diaper pail with some moisture on the inside, even if it is made of steel as you can imagine some unpleasant stuff might start to develop inside of it.
Known issues (fixed)
After the product came out, customers had reported that there were some issues with it like: bag tearing when replacing it, some rust accumulating on the sides inside the bin and rubber gasket coming off. Those issues have been addressed by the manufacturer and the product is safe to buy. No need to worry about that.
Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail does excellent job keeping the stink of diapers contained. It has stylish design and doesn’t even look like diaper pail. With 10 different colors to chose from you’ll one that will blend with your nursery decor.
So, if you don’t mind not having the a foot pedal to open it, but like the idea of having a solid build diaper pail that that does the job very well, will last and you can use it as regular garbage bin after the ‘diaper time’ is over, or may be for your second child, love the freedom of being able to use regular garbage bags, or reusable diaper liner this is a good choice.
A Diaper Pail That Takes Odor Protection To The Next Level
By now you know that most of the diaper pails available out there have one weakness, they are good at containing the odor when closed, but when you open it to put a diaper in there, some of the smell will escape.
Munchkin Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail takes the business of dirty diapers odor to the next level. It has not one, but double protection of keeping the odor out of your house or nursery.
It keeps the smell in even when throwing a diaper away and does very good job holding it in when emptying it out.
The bin holds a lot of diapers and has the baking soda in the lid which makes a big difference, and I love that you don’t have to buy a special baking soda refill, or filters, just pour a little from any box you have.
Here is how the extra odor protection works
In order to give you that extra protection they came up with a simple idea of adding a cartage to the lid where you simply put some baking soda in it and let it work the ‘magic’ on (absorb) the diaper ‘fragrance’ Also as the lid is being closed it ‘sprinkles’ some baking soda on the bag as well to absorb even more of unpleasant smells.
And they did stop there, moreover, it has built in Sealing Mechanism. As the lid is closed, it twists and seals the bag to lock odors in. And even keeps it sealed when the lid is reopened. You may be asking yourself, if the bag is sealed when the lid is open how are going to use it? Don’t worry, it’s simple, I’ll explain it in a moment.
Although everyone loves the build-in baking soda system to absorb the odor, not everyone likes the idea of it being ‘sprinkled’ on the bag. It’s not that the bag is covered with baking soda, some people just don’t like it because it requires regular maintenance 🙁
If you don’t clean the lid on regular basis, it will start to stick and became difficult to close, because the baking soda clogs up the plastic gears. So you need to take apart the pail and wash out the gears with soap and water. It requires about 5-10 minutes of maintenance once a month. To avoid this some people don’t refill the baking soda container at all. That’s something you need to take into consideration before making a purchase.
Usage and replacing the bag
There is no question about how easy and convenient it is to use this diaper pail. Just like with any product, there are some negative comments (I’ll get to those in a moment) but most parents agree that this is one of the pails that’s extremely user friendly.
Let’s start with opening and closing the lid. As a parent aside from a pail that eliminates the odor you want one that’s easy to use as 123 without spending time to memorize the user’s manual.
Although this one doesn’t have a ‘foot pedal’ opening it is very easy. Just press the lock on the lid with one finger and it pops up so you can quickly ditch the dirty diaper even while carrying your baby in the other hand.
Please keep in mind that lid does make a clicking sound as you open and close it, like a rollercoaster going up the track (not as loud though). If your child is a light sleeper don’t place it close to his bed.
Changing the bag full of diapers is just as easy as opening it. Because of the unique design, there is nothing to cut or tie. You just snap the plastic ring that’s on the top of the bag and remove it through the door. Since the bag can be closed within seconds, it also helps to eliminate odor from escaping while removing it.
And they just as easy to install as take out. That’s pretty amazing feature. See the video below to get a better idea of how it is done.
And to see if the bag if full and needs to be replaced, just open door on the side. Just keep in mind that the side door can be open by a toddler, so you need to be aware of that.
You might think that the downside of Munchkin Arm & Hammer are the refill bags that are made specifically for it and may be wondering how much they cost.
Well, here is the good news, they are durable, so you don’t have to worry about them tearing as you put diaper in them or carry them out to a trash bin. Hold a lot of diapers and are cheap.
When you buy them the wording may be confusing a bit, I’m not sure why they do that, like ’10 count pack of 3′ or ’20 count’, so basically the ‘count’ tells you how many disposable refill bags you’ll get and the ‘pack of…’ how many packs you’ll get. So in ’10 count pack of 3′ will get you 30 bags in total ( 10×3=30).
They offer them in a variety of sizes:
- 10 count = 10 bags
- 20 count = 20 bags
- 30 count = 30 bags
- 90 count = 90 bags
- 30 count, pack of 3 = 30 bags
Now, you have to pay attention to which package you buy, if you go for the let’s say
’30 count’ which costs only around $21.00 instead of ’10 count (pack of 3)’ which is around $24.00, you’ll get the same amount of bags for less.
The savings are even bigger if you buy bigger package, see this example:
’30 count (pack of 3)’ it will cost you about $109.00 but if you chose ’90 bags’ it will cost you about $70.00 and you’ll get the same amount of bags.
So by buying the ’90 bags’ instead of ’30 count (pack of 3)’ you’ll save some money. To get the most for your $$$, alway go for the count and not for the pack. They keep changing the prices, so you really have to pay attention to it. And you can even save more with amazon’s ‘subscribe and save’ option.
Each bag can hold up to 25 newborn diapers, which is about 5 – 6 days worth of diapers in each bag. Some parents claim that they can fit 30-35 diapers easily in there but that’s pushing it and could cause the pail to be damaged. If you really want to maximize the bag usage, some moms don’t waste them on urine soiled diapers and use them only for turds.
Possible issues, causes and how to deal with them
-One of the complaints about this pail is that over time, it’s getting harder and harder to close the lid.
Most of the time this is caused by the soda accumulating on the plastic gears. If you clean the lid like I mentioned above once a month, it takes no more than 5-10 min. you should have any problem with.
Another reason for the lid not working properly is overloading the pail with diapers. It holds good amount of diaper, so there is no need to squish more in it. By putting more in it than it can handle, one might think that they’ll save on bags but in the long run it may damage the product. The refill bags are very cheap, so there is no need to overload it.
-The front door that you take the bag out doesn’t shut well.
This usually happens when the pail is ‘super full. Don’t overload it. Or it could happen if the bag is getting full as per normal usage, it may lean on the door. If you push it slightly inside, or reposition it so it leans on the back of the pail you should have any problem.
Other than that there are no other problems with this diaper pail.
Customers experience with Munchkin Arm and Hammer Diaper Pail have been very positive. The primary reason why they buy it is to have best odor protection and it does performs very well to that end. Another reason they like it is that it seals the bag after each diaper is put into the pail. With some many features to keep the odor under control your house will never smell of used diapers.
The bags are durable, hold a lot of diapers. They love how they seal when full to easily dispose it in the trash. So there is no mess and no smell when you unload it. All in all a great product! Price range is for pail with 10 count refills
A Diaper Pail That’s Sleek, Stench-Proof, Ergonomic and Takes Regular Trash Bags
Bubula Stainless Steel Diaper Pail is a newcomer to the Diaper Pails market offering innovative solution to two problems. It keeps the smell of dirty diaper out of your nursery or living-room even when you open it to dispose a diaper and since you can use regular trash bags it is cost effective, so you don’t have to purchase special expensive liners.
What’s unique about this diaper pail is the way it seals the smell. The 2 part disposal system is were the magic happens.
Simply place the diaper in the small chamber, close the lid and press the button on top. When you press the button, the bottom of the 1st small compartment opens and the diaper falls down into the garbage bag.
The lid and the chamber are air-tight and the top door that opens to change the bag has strong and flexible rubber seals to prevent any leaks and keep odors locked in.
Here is how it works:
This simple, effective and easy to use system makes the pail stink-less and allows you to dispose a smelly diaper into a garbage bag without letting any stink out or holding your breath while accessing it. Which means no more diaper smell in your house.
Plus, you don’t have to buy any special bags, it uses standard tall garbage bags. 10-13 gallon bags are perfect for it but you can use any bag you would like.
Another great feature is that it is bigger and taller than most diaper pails out there (27.4 x 14.3 x 14.3 inches). Which means that at least a week’s worth of dirty diaper can be disposed quickly and easily.
What’s also important is since it is much higher than most units out there, you don’t have to bend down. You can deposit the diaper into this bin with one hand, leaving the other arm free to hold your baby.
It has a security lock too to keep little ones out 🙂
Build to last! It’s made of steel and aluminum, so it’s durable and doesn’t attract absorb odors like the plastic ones.
If you want a diaper pail that would:
- Control the odor very well
- Work with normal trash bags
- Hold a lot of diapers
- Is easy to use
- And has sleek modern design
This may be it! Great for taking care of the diapers and leaving the room smelling fresh and clean! The cost is higher, but you will save a lot by not buying special bags The money that you’ll be saving on bags are more than covers the cost. Plus you can use it later on as a regular trash bin.
You can pick from 7 colors to coordinate with your style and nursery design
All of those diaper pails are very good at what they do, as you can see each of offers different set of feature. So it’s kind of difficult to say which one is the best as it depends on which features are appealing to you the most and which will make your life easier. Some people like to be in full control of how they use the refills, and don’t mind cutting them as they see fit them, some don’t mind buying special refills and have best odor protection, others love the idea of have a diaper pail that doesn’t require any special bags.
