A nursing pillow is very popular for several reasons, but one of the top reasons is that they make breastfeeding or bottle feeding much easier. It helps position the baby closer to mom’s breast, making it easier for the baby to achieve a good latch. This makes nursing less work for mom and helps both mom and baby enjoy the nursing experience.
They come in different shapes and styles and provide support in many different ways. The right one will help your baby achieve a good latch without putting a strain on your arms, neck, and back. Some are available with extra padding to support the back when prolonged feeding sessions require long periods of sitting. Some will last well past the breastfeeding stage, others are made for breastfeeding only.
With so many choices out there finding the right one that’ll work best for you can be difficult. Buying each to try is not feasible and the task can be frustrating and confusing. This is precisely why I’ve put together this guide to help you find the best nursing pillow that will work for you. To help you make the right choice here you’ll find the benefits and disadvantages of each type. I hope that you’ll find one that you and your baby will enjoy.
Soft, Very Comfortable and Multi-Purpose Nursing Pillow
Leachco Cuddle-U is one of the best, one of the most versatile and can be used for so many other things besides feeding. It’s about twice as thick as most similar pillows and has just the right amount of firmness. It is firm enough to prop up baby properly for an optimal nursing position and soft enough so it’s not uncomfortable for the baby or mom.
Excellent for breast or bottle feeding. It wraps perfectly around the waist and provides great support for both mom and the baby. It’s very flexible and you’ll be able to use it throughout your breastfeeding journey as it easily adopts the different arm positions you’ll end up using for nursing as baby grows.
One of the unique features that make it stand out is the baby strap that keeps the baby in one place so you don’t have to worry about the baby sliding down or rolling off. The strap is perfect for a wiggly baby. And if you don’t need it you can fold it and store it the small pocket that’s underneath. The velcro strap is strong and will keep the baby safely in place, but keep in mind that it’s loud when you try to pull it off so you need to make sure to set up the baby and the pillow properly before you have a sleeping baby in it.
Apart from breastfeeding, you can use it to lay the baby down in whatever room you happen to be so you don’t have to worry about checking on your baby every few minutes. It’s also great for transporting baby from one place to another without disturbing their sleep. And when your baby is older and starts to sit it’s perfect for hanging out with parents or older siblings. It’s a lifesaver for babies with acid reflux that won’t sleep on a flat surface.
Babies love it too because the shape and design hold the baby like they are being cradled and held by someone making them feel very safe, comfortable and secure in it.
Although it washes really well and keeps its shape and firmness you need to be aware that the cover is not removable. But can be wiped it off with a damp soapy cloth if it happens to get a little messy. The reason why it doesn’t come with a cover is the adjustable strap that keeps the baby safe. To protect it from drools you can use a small receiving blanket over it. Or if you really need a cover the bobby cover fits it very well and will work great when the baby is older and no longer needs the harness.
Overall it’s a great all-around pillow, one of the best, high quality, well made and it’ll last for a while. It provides excellent support and comfort while breastfeeding. On top of that, it’s incredibly versatile and can be used for many things. Perfect for bottle-feeding, tummy time, crawling, sitting upright or just plain relaxing. Just the right size, not too big, not too small. Available in two colors, pink and sage. The sage green color is really pretty and gender-neutral. This is one of the most versatile and comfortable pillows I have come across and would recommend it to anyone. Great product, great price compared to some of the other pillows and worth every penny!

Excellent Back Support And Hassle-Free Nursing
My Brest Friend ergonomically designed pillow is perfect for those breastfeeding moms that need extra lumbar support. It’s made out of foam, it has the right amount of thickness, stays very firm, so you don’t have to spend any time trying to make it comfortable. One of the best features is the flat surface which gives a stable surface for the baby to rest. The wide front provides more space for a baby to lay than a traditional pillow. It has built-in 2 bumps (deluxe version only) on either side to support the baby’s head which helps to get a better position the baby while feeding.
Another great feature is that it goes all the way around your waist and it straps on. Because it straps on, you don’t have to hold it, it does stay in place very nicely and doesn’t change position. It can not fall off of you, it can not slide off of you. It stays in place no matter if you’re sitting on a chair or bed. Because it’s flush with the body there is no crease for the baby to sink or fall into. Which can be very frustrating when breastfeeding a baby. Also, it gives you a place to rest your arms comfortably while feeding. In case the baby falls asleep while being fed, you can unclip it fairly silent without waking the baby.
You can adjust it to your size any way you want, as tight as you need or as high or low. The adjustable strap is on the side making any adjustments very easy. Once you find the position that’s perfect for your waist size, it stays there so you don’t have to adjust it every time you use it. You just snap it on and off.
It doesn’t keep you restricted. You can stand with it strapped on and move around (while holding the baby) in case you urgently need something. It’ll happen, you’ll inevitably need something across the room when you’re breast/bottle feeding for a long time. Walking around with a pillow that doesn’t strap on is precarious, walking around with the baby on this pillow is much safer, although best is to stay put while nursing.
It also has a nice big thick contoured back support built into which is much appreciated. It helps maintain good posture when feeding and keeps the lower back comfortable. It also helps you sit up straight which is better for letting your milk down.
And since you’re more comfortable it’ll keep you nursing longer which is important because at first nursing takes forever. Also, great for any mom who is having back and shoulder issues while nursing or simply looking to prevent them.
The pocket to store things in it is an excellent idea. It’s not the most important factor whether you should buy it or not but it’s nice to have it and sometimes small things make a big difference. It gives you a place store things like burp cloths, pacifier, a bottle, nipple shields, cream, pads, etc.
Easy to take care of. It comes with a cover. The cover is easy to remove to wash and easy to put back on. To prevent shrinkage don’t use a heat dryer, just hang and let it dry. The cover is not waterproof but to prevent soaking you could cover it with a blanket. The pillow itself isn’t washable, you can spot clean it only.
It’s a very well-made quality product. Even after hundreds of uses, it stays exactly the same and won’t wear in, torn, and stretched out.
Perfect not only for breastfeeding but bottle feeding as well. Which means that even dad can use it and bottle feed the baby. All in all, it’s an excellent pillow and makes feeding so much easier and more comfortable.
It’s really helpful to find an effective nursing position and hold it. Besides that, it doesn’t have any other uses as your baby gets older. When a baby is a few months old it may be too big for it or you’re not going to strap it on when sitting in bed and your baby needs just a little quick nursing session. The best age range for this pillow is from newborn to about 3 – 4 months. It is an outstanding pillow and will make nursing a lot easier and more comfortable, just be aware of the limitations.
Price Range: $34.99 – $44.99
Boppy Original Makes Nursing Much Easier
BOPPY is the original and one of the most common pillows for nursing out there. Not too many people know that originally it wasn’t designed for nursing, it was designed to help small babies sit up without falling over. It became very popular when Phoebe used it to look at the triplets she gave birth to on the show ‘Friends’. And from then on it was the go-to pillow for nursing moms.
It’s really versatile and has lots of purposes. It is used primarily for nursing and props baby up saving you the trouble of having to hold your baby up to your breasts so your arms don’t get tired. Aside from nursing, it’s good for tummy time. It’s great to support baby when they start to sit up on their own. And if they fall over they land on the pillow rather than on the hard floor. You can prop 1-4 month old up in it for playtime and when they get old they can even lay in it on their stomach.
However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. It is rounded on top so the baby tends to topple. It works fine for nursing when sitting on a bed or floor and you’re sitting up straight. But if you’re sitting on a regular chair nursing baby close to you it has a tendency to push away from your body which causes you to readjust it often as there is nothing holding it in place.
But, it’s wonderful for nursing in a Rocker Glider. You can lay your baby across the pillow, it raises the baby to just the right height to nurse and the sides of the rocker keep it so it doesn’t slip. It’s useful for nursing as long as you sit in a chair with arms.
The cover has a zipper and comes off easily. Both the pillow and the cover are machine washable which is essential because inevitably your baby will spit-up or poop on it while you feeding them. You might have at least 2 covers if you’re going to use it so you can replace the cover while you wash the soil one. There are tons of extra covers available in different colors so you can always find one that goes well with your home or nursery decor.
Despite some limitations, it is a good very versatile pillow. The foam is soft and comfortable. It fits well around the waist and is very cushiony for a baby to lie on.
Price Range: $29.99 – $52.00
Available in 3 versions: Bare Pillow is just the pillow. Boppy With Cover, includes the pillow and classic slipcover which is removable for washing. Boppy Luxe, the cover on one side has ultra-soft Minky fabric and cool cotton blend on the other. So you can choose the side that is most comfortable. It also has thick piping with adorable applique.

The Plushest, The Softest, Most Comfortable Breastfeeding Pillow
Luna Lullaby Bosom breastfeeding pillow is one of the softest, most comfortable and versatile pillows on the market. The unique V shape is so much more comfortable than the typical ‘U’ or ‘C’ and allows it to fit flush against your body. You can comfortably do cradle hold, cross-cradle, as well as football-hold with it. If needed you can do a smooth and easy transition to the other breast and it stays right with the baby and won’t slide off of mom’s lap.
It’s a lot larger than a traditional one. It’s longer and wider so you can rest your hands, elbows, arms on it while feeding the baby. It can easily accommodate different nursing positions even with an older, bigger baby. It’s perfect for breastfeeding twins. There’s plenty of room on each side for one baby on the right and the other on the left.
It’s also thicker than the most pillows. It brings baby up far enough to a comfortable position for nursing so mom is not slouched over her baby and it also supports her elbows, shoulders and tiring arms. Because it’s thick and brings baby closer to your breasts it makes easier to get a baby in a good position for the latch on. So both mom and baby are happy and comfortable.
One of the best pillows for c-section moms. You can fit it looser around the incision so it does not provide as much pressure on it as a tighter pillow would.
Despite the fact that it’s larger than most pillows it’s lightweight and you’re not going to feel like you have a heavy plate on your lap.
It has the fluffiest stuffing. In addition to being the fluffiest and softest, it also has the softest cover. The fabric is thick, textured and very soft on both mom’s and baby’s skin. Both, the pillow and cover are washable. Even after many washes, it doesn’t fade and comes out looking like new. The cover is one of the easiest to remove to wash, easiest to put back on. It takes less than a minute.
It’s one of the most versatile. You can use it even before the baby arrives. It works great as a pregnancy pillow to support hips and back. It is comfortable to nurse bigger 12 months + babies meaning that you’ll be using it longer than a traditional one. Besides nursing, it’s perfect to prop up the baby’s back while they sit up or are learning how to sit up. You can use it for yourself for laying on, resting, back support while sitting, naps or watching movies on the couch.
It comes in non-baby colors so you can use it anywhere in your house. Even after a prolong use it won’t lose its shape, softness, and fluffiness.
It costs almost twice as much as other pillows but with the quality, all the benefits it provides, the fact that you can use it well past feeding as a regular pillow it’s worth every penny. Hands down, this is a winner. It will definitely appeal to those moms who like buying things w/multiple purposes and last long time.

Portable and Travel-Friendly
Itzy Ritzy egg-like design breastfeeding and bottle feeding pillow is relatively new on the market. It’s compact and comfortable. Instead of wrapping it around your waist, just slip it on your arm, rotate it around until you’ll find an angle/position that’s comfortable for you and your baby.
Not only it provides great support for the baby’s head for breast, bottle feeding or holding, it also provides the perfect support for your arms while feeding preventing arm and shoulder fatigue. It relieves the pressure of the baby’s head weighing on your arm. So no more shoulder and neck strain or arm pain.
It is plush enough and has the right amount of softness to support the baby’s head so you don’t have to worry about your baby sinking down into it.
With the unique design, size and shape it’s pretty flexible, works well with different feeding positions and nursing situations like on a couch, on a chair or in bed. Speaking of bed, it’s very useful for those 3 AM feedings, instead of going to the nursery you just slip it on your arm and you can feed right in your bed and when you’re done, remove it and both of you can go back to sleep.
It has soft fabric. The cover isn’t removable, but don’t worry, the entire pillow is machine washable. In addition, it’s small, compact and perfect for travel. It’s super easy to carry around from room to room, feed the baby in a car on road trips or vacation. Compare to traditional pillows the portability of it is very nice.
It works very well with an infant that’s 2 months old plus, for a newborn a traditional pillow is more appropriate.
Because you can basically use it for feeding and burping it’s not as versatile as other pillows but it doesn’t cost as much as other pillows. It’s extremely easy to use, perfect for on the go, travel, breast/bottle feeding, burping, reflux or just holding the baby. If you’re looking for something simple, this is a good inexpensive choice. A great alternative to a traditional standard size pillow.
